On February 8, Samsung announced that it has begun mass production of 256GB eUFS products based on automotive specifications. Samsung announced in September 2017 that it will launch a 128GB eUFS solution for next-generation automotive applications. Samsung's latest 256GB eUFS plans to ship to automakers for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and next-generation dashboards and infotainment systems to meet the growing storage needs of the automotive market.

Automotive grade storage products have very stringent requirements for heat treatment performance. The Samsung 256GB eUFS has an extended temperature range of -40°C to 105°C in both active and power-saving modes. The traditional embedded memory chip eMMC5.1 operates at -25°C - 85°C during vehicle operation and -40°C - 85°C when in idle or power-saving mode.

Kyoung Hwan Han, vice president of marketing for Samsung NAND Flash, said: "As the car's temperature threshold increases, the main car manufacturing is designed through Memory to improve reliability and even meet extreme environmental storage. Samsung will expand its business in the entire automotive market in the future. Combine and accelerate the growth of high-end storage products."
The Samsung 256GB eUFS product not only meets the new temperature specifications, but also features temperature notification. When the device temperature exceeds 105 ° C or reaches a preset temperature, the sensor notifies the host application processor (AP), and then the AP adjusts its clock speed to reduce the temperature to an acceptable level.
The Samsung 256GB eUFS continuously reads up to 850MB/s, achieving the high-end level of the JEDEC UFS 2.1 standard, and random reads up to 45K IOPS. In addition, the data refresh feature speeds up processing and increases system reliability by migrating old data to other less-used units.
On January 31, 2018, JEDEC released the Universal Flash Storage (UFS, Universal Flash Storage) v3.0 standard, introducing the HS-G4 specification, with single-channel bandwidth up to 11.6Gbps and dual-channel bandwidth up to 23.2Gbps.
The temperature notification and data refresh functions developed by Samsung are included in the UFS 3.0 specification released by the global semiconductor standards organization JEDEC. In the future, Samsung will strengthen its technical cooperation with global automakers and component suppliers, and continue to expand its eUFS lineup to lead the high-end storage market.
